Four assembly stages of the crochet cat bed: wrapped wooden hoop, hollow jute shell, two wool circles, and joined double mat

Materials & Sizing Specifications

Unlike flimsy cat beds worked in lightweight acrylic yarn that buckle under their own weight, this project pairs thick natural jute rope with an internal wooden embroidery hoop. This architectural structure creates a rigid doorway and self-supporting hollow dome that stays permanently open.

  • Outer Shell Fiber: Natural 3-ply jute rope or twine, approximately 3.5 mm in diameter. Ensure you use an untreated, pet-safe plant fiber without chemical petrol coatings.
  • Inner Mat Cushion Yarn: Bulky Category #5 or #6 soft wool yarn (suitable for a 6.5 mm hook), approximately 100 g (suggested: Hobbii Snowstorm or Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick) in Natural Cream.
  • Entrance Reinforcement: 1 smooth wooden embroidery hoop inner ring, 26 cm (10.25 inches) in diameter.
  • Crochet Hooks:
    • 8.0 mm (US L/11): Used for foundation hoop wrapping and entrance rounds 1–2. A sturdy metal or aluminum hook is strongly recommended for handling jute tension.
    • 10.0 mm (US N/P-15): Used for the main body depth and rear dome (rounds 3–38).
    • 6.5 mm (US K/10.5): Used for the circular double-layer wool mat.
  • Finishing Notions: Large steel tapestry needle (with an eye wide enough for jute), locking stitch markers, sharp thread snips, and an optional “Made with Love” faux-leather clip label for the entrance rim.
Finished Dimensions Approx. 40 cm long × 36 cm wide (16 × 14 in); 26 cm circular entrance
Inner Mat Diameter Approx. 29 cm (11.5 in) doubled wool circle
Skill Level Intermediate (Waistcoat stitch / Center single crochet & rigid frame crochet)

Stitch Key & Technique Notes (US Terms)

  • MR: Magic Ring (adjustable loop)
  • ch: Chain stitch
  • sc: Ordinary single crochet (insert under both top loops, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through 2)
  • wc (Waistcoat Stitch): Also known as center single crochet or split single crochet. Instead of inserting your hook beneath the top two loops, insert the hook directly through the center “V” between the two vertical legs of the stitch from the previous round. This forms an ultra-stiff, woven, knit-like structure that gives the cave its upright shape!
  • wc-dec (Waistcoat Decrease): Insert hook into center “V” of next stitch, draw up a loop, insert hook into center “V” of subsequent stitch, draw up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.
  • inc: Single crochet increase (work 2 sc into the same stitch)
  • sl st: Slip stitch
  • FO: Fasten off
  • [ … ] × 6: Repeat the bracketed sequence 6 times around
  • (number): Stitch count at the end of the round

Mastering the Waistcoat Stitch (wc)

Look closely at the front of each stitch. You will see a small vertical “V”. Push the tip of your 10.0 mm hook straight through the middle of that “V” rather than sliding under the horizontal braided ridges at the top. Keep your working tension relaxed so your hook slips easily into each round without splitting the jute strands.

Part 1: The Rigid Entrance Hoop Foundation

The entire cat bed begins by anchoring your thick jute cord directly around the wooden ring. This eliminates the #1 frustration of fabric cat caves: sagging doorway entrances that trap pets or collapse flat.

  1. Make the Starting Loop: Form a slipknot with your 3.5 mm jute cord and place it on your 8.0 mm metal hook. Hold the jute tail firmly along the rim of the 26 cm wooden embroidery hoop.
  2. Work Around the Ring: Pass your hook under the wooden hoop, catch the working jute, and draw a loop up to the top rim. Yarn over above the hoop and draw through both loops to complete 1 single crochet wrapped around the wood.
  3. Cover the Entire Perimeter: Repeat around the hoop until you have evenly spaced 72 single crochets covering the wood. Slide the stitches gently with your fingers to ensure the wood is completely concealed.
  4. Mark the Starting Point: Count six groups of 12 stitches (72 sts total). Place a locking stitch marker in the 72nd stitch. Do not join with a slip stitch; all subsequent rounds are worked in a continuous spiral!

Part 2: Main Body Depth & Arch Decreases (Rounds 1–38)

After wrapping the hoop, switch to your 10.0 mm hook on Round 3. This allows the stitches to expand slightly, forming an open cylindrical tube before tapering down into the parabolic rear arch.

Round 1 (8.0 mm hook): 1 wc in each of the 72 foundation stitches around the hoop. (72)

Round 2: 1 wc in each stitch around. (72)

Round 3 (Switch to 10.0 mm hook): 1 wc in each stitch around. The larger hook creates relaxed, open stitches for body depth. (72)

Rounds 4–17 (Straight Depth): 1 wc in each stitch around for 14 complete rounds without increasing or decreasing. This establishes the 20 cm interior length of the cave. (72)

Round 18 (Begin Symmetrical Decreases): [10 wc, wc-dec] × 6. (66)

Round 19 (Even Round): 1 wc in each stitch around. (66)

Round 20: [9 wc, wc-dec] × 6. (60)

Round 21 (Even Round): 1 wc in each stitch around. (60)

Round 22: [8 wc, wc-dec] × 6. (54)

Round 23: 1 wc in each stitch around. (54)

Round 24: [7 wc, wc-dec] × 6. (48)

Round 25: 1 wc in each stitch around. (48)

Round 26: [6 wc, wc-dec] × 6. (42)

Round 27: [5 wc, wc-dec] × 6. (36)

Round 28: [4 wc, wc-dec] × 6. (30)

Round 29: [3 wc, wc-dec] × 6. (24)

Round 30: [2 wc, wc-dec] × 6. (18)

Round 31: [1 wc, wc-dec] × 6. (12)

Round 32: [wc-dec] × 6. (6)

Closing: Fasten off, leaving a 25 cm tail. Thread your steel tapestry needle through the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches, pull tightly to cinch the back dome shut, and weave the tail securely inside the interior.

Part 3: Removable Double-Layer Wool Cushion Mat

To ensure maximum warmth and hygiene, this pattern features a removable, double-thick round mat worked in soft cream wool. Make two identical circular discs using your 6.5 mm hook:

Round 1: In Magic Ring, ch 1, work 6 sc. Pull ring closed. (6)

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around. (12)

Round 3: [1 sc, inc] × 6. (18)

Round 4: [2 sc, inc] × 6. (24)

Round 5: [3 sc, inc] × 6. (30)

Round 6: [4 sc, inc] × 6. (36)

Round 7: [5 sc, inc] × 6. (42)

Round 8: [6 sc, inc] × 6. (48)

Round 9: [7 sc, inc] × 6. (54)

Round 10: [8 sc, inc] × 6. (60)

Round 11: [9 sc, inc] × 6. (66)

Round 12: [10 sc, inc] × 6. (72)

Round 13: [11 sc, inc] × 6. (78)

Round 14: [12 sc, inc] × 6. (84)

Fasten off Disc 1. Do not fasten off Disc 2. Stack both discs with wrong sides facing together. Work 1 sc through both thicknesses in all 84 stitches around the perimeter. Sl st to first st, fasten off, and weave ends inside. Slide the plush double-layer cushion inside your finished jute cave!
